Fighting acne the natural way

IF you suffer from acne, you have no doubt been tempted to blitz blemishes with chemicals. Or you might have scrubbed at your skin with abrasive cleansers and exfoliators. "Most people with acne overdo it," says beauty therapist Tamara Hart from Éminence Organic Skin Care. "They think the cleaner the skin is, the better. All this does is strip the skin of the moisture it needs, which exacerbates the issue. Allowing the skin to function naturally is the way to go." Hart says often the skin's flora has been disturbed and using simple supermarket products, such as natural yoghurt, as a mask can help. "Seek skincare that contains natural probiotics, that can restore the good flora and allow skin to resist its own breakout by strengthening and healing," she says. Rita-Marie Hopfner, founder of certified organic skincare line La Clinica for Skin & Body, agrees. "You don't want to traumatise the skin, upset its acid mantle or dry out the surface. You need to keep it clean and unblocked, but you must not strip it. When skin becomes dry it overcompensates and produces more oil." Hopfner suggests balancing moisture, improving circulation and calming skin with natural ingredients with an antibacterial effect such as tea tree oil. "We also use naturally derived polyhydroxy acids, which are gentler on the skin. Include clarifying ingredients, too, such as licorice and willow bark extracts, as people with acne may sometimes experience pigmentation or scarring." The myth that chocolate causes zits was refuted long ago, however certain foods can contribute to blemishes, naturopath Saimaa Miller says. "Dairy foods are mucus-producing, which can slow lymphatic drainage and block pores. This allows toxins to build within the skin." Eating the right foods can lower the incidence of outbreaks. "Include plenty of essential fatty acids in your diet, from fish, flaxseed oil and avocados," Miller says. "Vitamin A from organic liver, egg yolks, green and yellow fruits and vegetables will help, too. Zinc is very healing. Source it from meat, liver, seafood, green vegetables, brown rice and wholegrain bread. Don't forget bioflavonoids [found in oranges, red capsicum and other red foods], as well as vitamins A and C." Miller also suggests drinking bentonite clay, found in health-food stores, with water. "Bentonite clay is often referred to as 'healing clay' due to its drawing and absorptive activity. It removes heavy metals, chemicals and toxins both topically and internally. It also contains a wide range of minerals including silica, aluminium, iron, sodium, titanium, magnesium, calcium and potassium," Miller says. "Heavy metals, drugs and pollutants are absorbed by the clay and removed through faecal matter. It is also said to aid symptoms of constipation and diarrhoea as it is a wonderful cleanser for the large intestine when used in conjunction with colon therapy." If that sounds too intimidating, simply apply the clay as a mask, which will help clear blemishes.
